Today is day twenty-seven of the federal government shut down. While “management” refuses to solve the impasse, we all pay the price for their intransigence; but the eight hundred thousand federal employees going without pay are paying the greatest cost. An increasing number of those employees are further abused by being forced to work in spite of no pay. Political games, power struggle, childishness – call it what you may, it’s wrong and immoral. It’s wrong to stop paying employees because management can’t get along. Yes, they will probably get back pay when this tiff is over. (I say “probably” because in this non-functioning example of self government, anything is possible). But getting paid “eventually” does not work for most of us. We depend on knowing what we will have available to support ourselves and our families, and knowing that those funds will be available on a set schedule. We go to work expecting that our commitment to the employer will be rewarded with an equal commitment by management to provide compensation IN A PREDICTABLE MANNER. I doubt that upper management (the President and Congress) are having problems paying their bills during this disaster. They are still being paid, and even if they weren’t I doubt any of them are living pay check to pay check.
